ATS Resume Checklist: Layouts, Fonts, and Graphics to Avoid
Common design mistakes that trigger parser failures and disqualify qualified candidates from tech roles.
Many beautifully designed resumes are completely unreadable by modern Applicant Tracking Systems. Avoid these critical layout choices.
1. Avoid Multi-Column Grids & Text Boxes: Parser bots read left-to-right across the page and frequently blend two columns into incomprehensible gibberish.
2. Steer Clear of Graphic Skill Meters: Rating yourself "4/5 stars" or using colored skill bars cannot be read by ATS keyword analyzers.
3. Use Standard Web-Safe Fonts: Stick to Inter, Arial, Calibri, Roboto, or Helvetica. Avoid non-standard fonts that convert into garbled symbols upon export.
4. Keep Headers & Footers Free of Vital Data: Some legacy parsers ignore document headers and footers; place contact information inside the main body.
5. Standard Section Titles: Use recognized terms ("Work Experience", "Education", "Skills") rather than creative section headings like "Where I've Been".
